Brunette's hat trick lifts Avs over Oilers

Hockey Betting Lines

12/20/2006 - Edmonton, AB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Andrew Brunette netted his first career hat trick to help the Colorado Avalanche to a 7-6 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.

Paul Stastny had a goal and three assists and Pierre Turgeon added a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, who have won four of their last five games.

Peter Budaj stopped 31 shots for Colorado, which has won three straight against Edmonton after dropping the first two games this season.

Petr Sykora had a two-goal game while Raffi Torres and Toby Petersen each added a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have lost two straight and four of their last five games. Dwayne Roloson stopped 23-of-30 shots in the loss.

With the game tied, 6-6, Colorado grabbed a 7-6 lead with 8:33 left in the game when Brett McLean stuffed the puck into the net during a scrum in front.

The Oilers threw everything they had at Budaj and pulled Roloson with a little over a minute to play, but was unable to net the equalizer.

Edmonton grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first period when Petersen scored his first goal of the season at the 4:06 mark and Jarret Stoll tallied his ninth marker of the campaign a little less than two minutes later.

Colorado got on the scoreboard when Turgeon found the net for his fourth goal of the season at the 12:37 mark of the first, but Edmonton immediately responded when Torres scored to make it a 3-1 game with 4:49 left in the first.

The Avs, though, scored the next four goals to assume a 5-3 lead.

Brunette made it a 3-2 game when he scored a power-play goal with four minutes left in the first before Mark Raycroft tied the game with a backhand shot from the slot through a screen 7:25 into the second.

Colorado took its first lead of the game when Brunette scored on a one-timer from the low slot during a 5-on-3 power play with 3:16 left in the second and increased its lead to 5-3 when Brunette completed the hat trick with a backhander from the low slot that went into the left corner of the net with 34 seconds left in the second stanza.

Edmonton, though, made it a 5-4 game just 31 seconds into the third period when Sykora's one-timer from the right side found the back of the net to make it a 5-4 game.

Stastny got the goal back for the Avalanche when he banged the puck into the net during a scrum in front at the 4:12 mark of the third to make it a 6-4 game.

The Oilers, however, didn't quit and scored the next two goals to tie the game.

A turnover in the Colorado zone resulted in Ales Hemsky getting the puck and from the low left circle he dished it to Sykora, who banged it into the open net from the right side with 12:51 left in the game.

Edmonton then made it a 6-6 game when Joffrey Lupul tapped in a rebound from the low right side at the 8:18 mark of the third.
